About Tipperary

Landlocked in the south of Ireland, County Tipperary was established in the early 13th century after the Norman invasion. A largely rural region, it is dotted with well-preserved towns and centuries-old ruins that stand as a testament to the county’s tumultuous past.

Things to do in Tipperary

With its stunning countryside, atmospheric towns and rich architectural history, County Tipperary is not to be missed.

Explore the Rock of Cashel. Dominated by a well-preserved round tower, the Rock of Cashel is a cluster of medieval and Celtic ruins overlooking County Tipperary’s rolling countryside. It rises dramatically atop a limestone outcrop in the Golden Vale and was originally the seat of the kings of Munster. Marvel at its Gothic cathedral and the 15th-century Tower House, then see the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland within Cormac’s Chapel.

See the audiovisual show at Cahir Castle. Perched atop an island in the River Suir, Cahir Castle is one of the largest fortifications in Ireland. Listed as a National Monument, its construction began in 1142 by the King of Thomond and it has since served as a film set for TV shows and movies. Learn about the castle’s fascinating past during the impressive audiovisual show or explore on a guided tour.

Sightsee in Clonmel. Serving as Tipperary’s county town, Clonmel played an important role in Irish history by resisting the advance of Oliver Cromwell’s army. Admire the arcaded facade of the 17th-century Main Guard and get up close to Stone Age artefacts at the Tipperary County Museum, then wander through the charming grounds of Old St. Mary's Church. A short drive from Clonmel is the beautifully preserved medieval town of Fethard, which is ringed by 13th-century walls.

Getting around Tipperary

County Tipperary is around 30 minutes’ drive from Limerick and two hours from Dublin. Dublin Airport is also two hours away and has flights to destinations across Europe, North America and the Middle East. Train services connect from the Irish capital to major towns throughout County Tipperary while buses serve smaller villages. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around.
