About Santa Maria, CA

Surrounded by picturesque wineries and tasting rooms, Santa Maria lies along California’s Central Coast. It’s famed for its Santa Maria-style barbecue, which originated in the 19th century when local ranchers would host Spanish-inspired feasts for their vaqueros (livestock herders).

Things to do in Santa Maria

Learn about the people and events that have made the city what it is today at the Santa Maria Historical Society Museum. It exhibits old photographs, artefacts and memorabilia and is a centre for local genealogy. Hear about the cultural traditions of the Chumash Indians who once inhabited the region, then browse the displays dedicated to the Mission, Rancho and Pioneer periods.

Birdwatchers shouldn’t miss a visit to Preisker Park, a recreational area renowned for its nestling Lawrence’s goldfinches. Children can let loose on the two playgrounds and the replica of the “Santa Maria” ship, with several barbecue pits and picnic areas to enjoy. There’s also a disc golf course and leafy walking trails to explore.

A short drive west of Santa Maria are the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, which form one of the largest dune systems in California. Stretching for 29 kilometres along the coastline, the dunes provide habitat for several endangered species of plants and animals. Visit the Dunes Center to browse the exhibits about the local ecology or join a docent-led walk. While much of the area is set aside for conservation, there are recreational spots for off-road driving.

Getting around Santa Maria

Santa Maria Public Airport is a 10-minute drive from the city centre and has regular flights to Phoenix, Las Vegas and Portland. The much larger Los Angeles International Airport is four hours away. Long-distance buses connect to Santa Maria from destinations across California and travel throughout the city.
