About Sheridan

Famed for its ranching heritage and rodeo culture, Sheridan lies partway between Yellowstone National Park and Mount Rushmore in Wyoming’s far north. It was surveyed in 1882 and named after Philip Sheridan, who served as a Union general during the American Civil War. In addition to cattle grazing, Sheridan had a thriving coal mining industry until the 1950s.

Things to do in Sheridan

For insight into life in the Old West, visit the Don King Museum, which occupies a historic saddlery in the Downtown area. In addition to its impressive collection of antique saddles, it exhibits vintage guns, wagons and Native American artefacts. You can get up close to a horse-drawn hearse and taxidermied native animals such as bears, moose and elk.

On the opposite side of Big Goose Creek is the Trail End State Historic Site, which preserves the home of the former United States senator, John B. Kendrick. It was constructed in the early 20th century while Kendrick was a cattleman before he started his political career. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the historic home is filled with period furnishings and original objects.

After your visit, you can stroll the leafy walking trails of Kendrick Park, which is home to a small herd of buffalo and elk. Kids can let loose in the large playground or refresh with a swim in the pool while parents prepare lunch at one of the picnic tables. During the summer months, live music concerts are held in the bandshell.
