About Decatur, IL

Serving as the seat of Macon County, Decatur lies along the banks of the Sangamon River in the heart of Illinois. It is named after the U.S. naval officer Stephen Decatur, who served in the War of 1812, the Barbary Wars and the Quasi-War with France.

Things to do in Decatur

Travelling with kids? Spend a day at the Children's Museum of Illinois, which is packed with hands-on and interactive exhibits dedicated to healthy living and critical thinking. Outside the museum is a real-life firetruck and a helicopter while inside is the Heroes Hall, which explores the role of law enforcement in the community.

Animal lovers can visit Scovill Zoo, which is home to 500 animals representing around 100 different species. You can get up close to three-banded armadillos, ring-tailed lemurs and two-toed sloths, as well as cheetahs, wolves and red pandas. Kids can ride the Endangered Species Carousel or the Z.O. & O. Express, which offers magnificent views across Lake Decatur along its route.

On the other side of Decatur is Fairview Park, a popular recreational space with sporting facilities, an outdoor swimming pool and a skate park. You can explore along the walking and cycling trails or enjoy a stroll through the fragrant rose garden. At the heart of the green space is Dreamland Pond and the aptly named Duck Island.

Getting around Decatur

Decatur is around 45 minutes’ drive from Springfield and just under an hour from Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, which has flights to destinations across the United States. Decatur Airport is a 10-minute drive from the city centre and has flights to Chicago. Long-distance buses connect to Decatur while renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the city.
