About Heilongjiang

Heilongjiang is one of China’s most unique provinces, thanks to its border with Russia, which has led to numerous Russian structures and a rich China-Russia culture within the capital city, Harbin. Translating to “Black Dragon” in Chinese, Heilongjiang is blessed with exceptional winter skiing and snowboarding, one of China’s biggest ice sculpture festivals and remote lakeside villages.

If you’re visiting Heilongjiang during winter, visit Yabuli Ski Resort, the biggest of its kind in China. About 2.5 hours from Harbin, this sprawling ski and snowboarding area features numerous challenging runs for experienced riders and small slopes and skilled teachers for beginners. It’s also home to China’s biggest ski jumping facilities.

You’ll find most of Heilongjiang’s Russian influence within the capital city of Harbin, particularly the iconic Saint Sophia Cathedral. Opened in 1907, this former Russian Orthodox church boasts an on-site architecture and art museum, priceless religious relics and a distinct Byzantine Revival architecture style.

Nature lovers should venture out into Heilongjiang’s diverse countryside, particularly Zhenbao Island, which features verdant forests along the meandering Ussuri River. Alternatively, you can hike through the Lesser Khingan mountain range or admire the thundering waterfalls along Jingpo Lake.

Families have numerous sightseeing options throughout the province, such as Harbin Polarland, an aquatic-themed aquarium home to polar bears, sea lions, penguins and belugas. You can also visit the Siberia Tiger Park to get up close with Siberian tigers. Time your visit for the annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, where you can see intricate ice sculptures illuminated in rainbows at night.
