About Tinos

Dotted with dozens of windmills, Tinos is a picture-perfect Greek island forming part of the Aegean Sea’s Cyclades archipelago. In addition to hosting an annual pilgrimage marking the Dormition of the Mother of God, the island features a whitewashed convent and beautiful beaches where you can swim, sunbathe and surf.

Things to do in Tinos

The town of Tinos is home to one of the most important religious pilgrimage destinations in Greece, the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, which was constructed around an icon discovered by the nun, Pelagia. Admire the white marble esplanade that fronts the Renaissance-style church, then step inside to see the gemstone-adorned icon. Coincide your visit with the yearly “feast” to watch as pilgrims make their way to the church on their hands and knees.

Nestled high up in the mountains of Tinos is the Assumption of the Mother of Lord Kechrovouni, a whitewashed convent inhabited by around 40 nuns. Established in the 10th century, it appears like a Cycladic settlement, with stone-paved alleys that open out to breathtaking views across the island. Aside from offering a slice of tranquility, the convent is also home to an impressive wood-carved screen of the Virgin Mary.

On the north-west coast of Tinos is Panormas, a peaceful fishing bay where you can dine on freshly caught seafood at one of the local tavernas. For something more active, head to the beaches of Kolimbithra and Langada where surf-able waves break or relax on the family-friendly sands of Agios Ioannis Porto and Agios Sostis.

Getting around Tinos

Daily ferries connect from the Athens port of Piraeus to the town of Tinos, as well as from the neighbouring islands of Mykonos and Syros. Renting a scooter or car is the best way of exploring the island.
