The most-famous lake in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Lake Tahoe holds enough water to cover the entire state of California over 30 centimeters deep. In fact, Lake Tahoe is so deep that the Empire State Building and Willis Tower wouldn’t reach the surface if they were on the bottom.
While the Lake Tahoe region is popular in winter for snow sports, the lake itself is more a summertime destination. Rental facilities are available for various water sports, including kayaking, water skiing, wakeboarding and sailing. Another option for adventurous visitors is a fishing excursion, either from shore or on a sports fishing charter.
Due to its remarkably clear water, Lake Tahoe is an ideal destination for anyone interested in swimming, diving and underwater photography. Keep an eye out for the legendary Tahoe Tessie, Lake Tahoe’s version of the famous Nessie of Loch Ness.
Getting there
The north shore of Lake Tahoe is about 45 minutes by car from downtown Reno, with the more popular south shore located about one hour away. California’s capital city, Sacramento, is about two hours from the lake.
