About Arezzo

Centred around the historic city of Arezzo (known in Etruscan times as “Aritim”), the Province of Arezzo lies in the far east of Tuscany. It extends from the rugged peaks of the Pratomagno and Casentino mountain ranges to the fertile valleys of the Tiber and Chiana rivers, with its strategic location seeing it fought over for centuries.

Things to do in Arezzo

Whether you want to admire the beautifully preserved architecture of Arezzo or escape to the tranquil shores of Lago Trasimeno, the Province of Arezzo is an underrated gem.

Sightsee in Arezzo. Centred around a bustling piazza, Arezzo is a hilltop city and the capital of Arezzo Province. It’s home to a pentagonal-shaped fortress that dates back to the 16th century and a magnificent cathedral with painted ceilings and reliefs by Donatello. Admire the Piero frescoes that decorate the Basilica di San Francesco before stepping inside the lavish interior of the 19th-century Teatro Petrarca.

Relax on the shores of Lago Trasimeno. Sprawling across 128 square kilometres, Lago Trasimeno is one of the largest lakes in Italy and provides an important habitat for wild ducks, kites and kingfishers. Charming villages dot its shores, including Castiglione del Lago with its Etruscan tombs and medieval Città della Pieve. Rent a boat to explore the lake from the water and visit the scenic islands of Isola Minore and Isola Maggiore.

Explore Monte San Savino. Overlooking the Esse Valley, Monte San Savino is a storied town that was long fought over between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. You can learn about its ancient ceramic traditions at the Cassero Museum, which occupies the Porta Fiorentina, before visiting the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Vertighe. Also of note is the Logge dei Mercanti designed by the 16th-century Italian architect Nanni di Baccio Bigio.

Florence Airport is the main aviation gateway to the Province of Arezzo and has flights to destinations across Europe.
