Set on the Kaveri River, Shivanasamudra Falls plunges 90 metres down a rocky ravine. The falls are at their best in the monsoon season from July to October, when the Kaveri River is flowing fast and there’s plenty of water plunging down the rockface.
Just before reaching the cliff the river breaks into two arms, creating a pair of side-by-side falls known as Gaganachukki and Barachukki. The effect is spectacular and can be admired from one of the scenic viewpoints overlooking the falls. A staircase winds down to the base of the falls where you can get up close with the cascade and feel the mist on your face. Just downstream is one of the first hydroelectric power stations in India.
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a short stroll from the falls and is one of the finest examples of Dravidian architecture in Karnataka. It’s dedicated to the Hindu God Ranganatha and boasts a scenic setting on the River Kaveri.
Getting there
Shivanasamudra Falls is located in the Chamarajanagar district, a three-hour drive from Bengaluru. Mysore Airport is a two-hour drive away.
