Centred around a crossroads to the east of Jazan, Abu ‘Arish is a bustling village in the south of Saudi Arabia. It was once an important hub for the production of salt and boasts ancient castle ruins, a recreational dam and sculptural roundabouts among its attractions.
In the heart of Abu ‘Arish are the remains of Dar Anassir, a centuries-old military fortress built in an Ottoman style. Circular towers frame its square-shaped design while openings at the top of its wall are testament to its defensive purpose. Adjacent to Dar Anassir is a family-friendly park with grassy picnic areas and a soccer pitch.
Abu ‘Arish is an ideal base for visiting Jazan Wadi Dam, which was completed in 1970 to provide irrigation and flood control for the surrounding agricultural fields. Sorghum, eucalyptus and tamarisk are all grown on its shores to prevent desertification and walking trails meander through Al Ain Al Harra Park.
Getting there
Abu ‘Arish is around 30 minutes’ drive from Jazan and Jazan Regional Airport, which has flights to destinations across the Middle East. Buses connect to Abu ‘Arish while renting a car is the most convenient way of exploring the region.
