Where to stay in Bacău

About Bacău

Spreading across the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Bacau is a naturally resplendent city on Bistrita River. Waterfalls, nature reserves and spas beckon to outdoor enthusiasts, while museums, centuries-old churches and a family-friendly observatory offer rich culture.

Things to do

The salt mine of Targu Ocna lies two kilometres outside the city, offering restorative soaking, sports facilities and game rooms. Step inside the underground orthodox church to view furnishings crafted from salt, including the altarpiece and chandelier. The salt mine also houses the underground Museum of Salt, which showcases the therapeutic qualities of salt and evolution of the salt industry.

Stop by the 15th-century Precista Church, a centrepiece of the Princely Court of Bacau and legacy of Alexander, son of Stephen the Great. Visit Bacau History Museum to see antiques and artefacts from the ancient Dacian inhabitants, then browse the Ethnographic Museum to see ceramics, agricultural tools, toys and clothing.

Thundering waterfalls beckon from nearby mountains, including Bucias Waterfall, which tumbles 20 metres through verdant forests and cliffs. Hike to the Water of Stone complex in the Nemira Mountains for beautiful views of four cascading falls.

Don’t miss experiencing Nemira Mountains Nature Preserve, home to wildcats, tawny owls, spotted eagles and dozens of indigenous species. You can go horseback riding, cycling and fishing at Balatau Lake. Back in the city, turn your gaze skyward at Victor Anestin Astronomical Observatory for a chance to view galaxies, pulsars and quasars.

Getting around

It’s easy to rent a car at Bacau International Airport, located just a few minutes’ drive outside the city centre. Buses and taxis are the primary modes of transportation.
