Set on a sun-drenched peninsula, Buzios is one of the most sought-after beach resorts in Brazil. Once a laid-back fishing village, Buzios transformed into an upscale resort in the 1960s when it attracted a throng of celebrity sunseekers. As well as stunning beaches, Buzios will charm you with its designer boutiques, fine-dining restaurants, trendy bars and high-end accommodation.
With no less than 17 beaches to choose from, Buzios is a paradise for sunseekers. Popular with the younger crowd, Geriba boasts soft sand and crystalline water. Brava Beach is surrounded by forested cliffs and has a remote feel. The calm waters of Tartaruga Beach are great for snorkelling, with plenty of beach bars and restaurants to enjoy after your swim.
Buzios is made up of three characterful towns, each with its own charm. Ossos is perched on the northern tip of the peninsula and is set around a picturesque harbour. The neighbourhood has retained much of its old-world charm and is a maze of cobblestone streets lined with historic buildings. Armação has a lively atmosphere, with plenty of cafes, bars and bistros to choose from.
Orla Bardot stretches between Armação and Ossos and boasts beautiful views over the beach. The promenade is dotted with sculptures by local artist Christina Motta, including fantastic depictions of former Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek and French celebrity Brigitte Bardot, who used to holiday in Buzios.
Food and wine is a big part of the Buzios experience. Enjoy sunset cocktails at a waterfront bistro, then head to an upscale seafood restaurant for grilled octopus and creamy “moqueca” Brazilian fish stew.
Buzios is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Minibuses and taxis are a fast and affordable way to travel between the villages. Rio de Janeiro is a three-hour drive west.
