About Covington, GA

Named after a hero from the War of 1812, Leonard Covington, Covington is a small city on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia. It was incorporated in 1821 and encompasses two heritage districts, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Things to do in Covington

Some of Covington’s most beautiful buildings are protected within the Floyd Street Historic District, ensuring their character is preserved for future generations. It includes architectural landmarks dating from the early 19th century all the way through to the 1940s. Several scenes from the “Vampire Diaries” were filmed in the area, with guided tours taking in the most famous locations. Props and costumes from the “Vampire Diaries” are exhibited at the On Location museum.

On the outskirts of Covington is the Ashton Hills Golf Club, which centres around an 18-hole course designed by Desmond Muirhead. The club also boasts a large driving range and a putting green for practising your short-range game. After your round, you can refuel with lunch at the Village Grille, which is also open for dinner.

On the western outskirts of Covington is Newton County Turner Lake Park, a popular recreational area with well-marked walking trails and a children’s playground. You can watch the ducks from one of the wooden bridges or cast a fishing line to see what’s biting in the lake before enjoying a picnic in the pavilion. Also within the park are several baseball diamonds where you can throw a ball around.
