About Dongshi Township

Wedged between the Beigang and Puzi rivers, Dongshi Township sprawls along the Taiwan Strait within Chiayi County. It’s home to bird-filled wetlands and an ecological museum, as well as a historic fishing wharf that has been transformed into a family-friendly leisure destination.

Things to do in Dongshi Township

Overlooking the mouth of the Puzi River is the Dongshi Fisherman’s Wharf, which encompasses a lively fish market and a wooden trail that offers magnificent views across the Taiwan Strait. Jump aboard one of the tourist boats to explore the traditional fishing village or let the kids run loose in the water playground. In addition to a restaurant serving gourmet cuisine, the wharf also features lifelike sculptures of fishermen in action.

To learn more about the fishing and agricultural history of the township, pay a visit to the Dongshi Natural Ecological Exhibition Center. It lies adjacent to the Aogu Wetlands and Forest Park, which is a popular birdwatching destination. Browse the exhibits dedicated to the local ecology before renting a bicycle to explore the wetland trails at your leisure.

One of Dongshi Township’s most important religious landmarks is the Gangkou Temple, which was originally founded in 1684 at the mouth of the Beigang River. The current brick temple was rebuilt in 1811 and is dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu. Watch the local devotees coming and going or coincide your visit with the annual Ghost Festival as residents pray for protection against floods.

Getting around Dongshi Township

Dongshi Township is around 40 minutes’ drive from Chiayi City and 30 minutes from Chiayi Airport, which has regular flights to Kinmen and Penghu. Buses connect to Dongshi and travel throughout the township. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the region.
