About Golubac

Golubac is an ancient village set on the banks of the Danube River and dominated by a centuries-old castle. Venture out the village to explore Đerdap National Park and visit one of the most important archaeological sites in Serbia.

Things to do in Golubac

Golubac Fortress towers over the village and dates back to the 14th century. The imposing stronghold was built by the Romans and has been commandeered by the Ottomans, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Austrians and Serbians over the centuries. Gaze up at the enormous towers and climb the ramparts for spectacular views over the Danube and the surrounding countryside.

Stop by the visitor centre to learn more about the fascinating history of the castle. The archaeological park protects a medieval kiln, Roman-era house and Ottoman hammam. Head to the café for delicious homemade cakes and fantastic views over the fortress and the Danube.

Tuman Monastery is dedicated to Archangel Gabriel and will charm you with its whitewashed façade and cupolas. Walk around the grounds of the 14th-century Orthodox monastery and meet the friendly herd of goats.

Golubac is a great base for exploring Đerdap National Park, which stretches along the Danube River and is part of a UNESCO global geopark. Use the waymarked hiking trails to explore the park on foot or board a scenic cruise along the Danube.

Lepenski Vir is one of the most important archaeological sites in Serbia and protects more than 12,000 years of history. The Paleolithic site is set on the banks of the Danube and is famous for its carved stone sculptures.

Getting around Golubac

Golubac is compact and easy to get around on foot. The town is located in the Braničevo District, a two-hour drive from Belgrade. Rental cars are the best way to visit Golubac and explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. Nikola Tesla Airport is a two-hour drive away.
