About Himeji

One of the largest cities in Hyōgo Prefecture, Himeji overlooks the Seto Inland Sea west of Osaka. It is famed for its beautifully preserved castle dating from Japan’s feudal period, with royal residential quarters and traditional gardens just waiting to be explored.

Things to do in Himeji

A short drive north of Himeji is Mount Shosha, where forested slopes are home to the atmospheric temple complex of Engyoji. It has a rich history dating back more than 1,000 years and was used as a film setting for “The Last Samurai”. Admire the wooden-built Maniden before spotting endangered bird species on the surrounding walking trails. From Engyoji, you’ll be treated to elevated views across Himeji.

Himeji’s most famous architectural landmark is its whitewashed castle, which is affectionately known as the “White Heron” due to its elegant design. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of Japan’s 12 original castles and dates back to the 15th century. Stroll along the cherry tree-lined paths that connect the castle’s gates, baileys and six-storey keep, and visit the top floor to see a small shrine.

Adjacent to the castle are the traditional Edo-style gardens of Kōko-en, which features tranquil bamboo groves, a picturesque pond and a feature waterfall. You can relax with a green tea in the peaceful tea garden, hop between the stepping stones and admire the seasonal blooms. Kōko-en is particularly majestic in autumn when the leaves change colour.
