About Holt

Perched on a wooded ridge in Norfolk, Holt is a small market town that lies at the southern terminus of the “Poppy Line”. It was in existence at the time of the Domesday Book’s writing in 1086 and was rebuilt in a Georgian style following a devastating 1708 fire.

Art enthusiasts can visit the Bircham Gallery, a light-filled exhibition space that showcases contemporary works from East Anglia and beyond. In addition to paintings and sculptures, there are ceramics, glass art and jewellery on display. The Bircham Gallery can be visited on the Holt Owl Trail, which takes in the Old School House, Franklyns Yard and the Old Post Office.

Also known as the “Poppy Line”, the North Norfolk Railway is an eight-kilometre-long heritage steam railway that connects Holt with Sheringham. It takes in some of Norfolk’s most stunning natural scenery and offers hands-on experiences that allow you to get behind the controls of its steam and diesel locomotives. In the Victorian seaside town of Sheringham, you’ll find engaging museums and mural-adorned streets.

If you want to stretch your legs, follow one of the walking trails that lead through the woodlands of Sheringham Park. Designed by Humphry Repton in the early 19th century, it is planted with magnolias, azaleas and rhododendrons. After admiring the Grade II-listed Sheringham Hall, you can visit the garden temple or soak up the views of the Norfolk coastline from one of the lookout towers.
