Running along a narrow-gauge railway built for transporting limestone, Ida Bay Railway is a heritage tramway south of Tasmania. It departs from Lune River Station and travels to the shores of beautiful Ida Bay before continuing to the old limestone pier at Deep Hole.
Step aboard one of Ida Bay Railway’s early-20th-century locomotives for a two-hour journey through Southern Tasmania’s wild forests, with sightings of native wildlife and birds along the way. Soak up magnificent views across Recherche Bay during a beach stop at the southern end of the railway and wander along the pristine white sands.
Alternatively, opt to ride the only pedal and battery-powered rail bike in Australia while learning about the century-old history of quarrying in the Ida Bay area. The Ida Bay Railway is around one hour’s drive from Huonville and 1.5 hours from Hobart. Hobart International Airport is just under two hours away.
