About Jindo

One of the largest islands in South Korea, Jindo lies just off the south-west corner of the Korean peninsula. It’s separated from the mainland by the Myeongnyang Strait, which is spanned by twin cable-stayed bridges that are the longest in the country. Jindo is renowned for the Korea Jindo dog, a breed native to the island and has been designated as one of South Korea's Natural Treasures.

Things to do in Jindo

Marvel at the spectacular Jindo Bridges, two cable-stayed bridges that span 484 metres across the Myeongnyang Strait to connect Jindo to the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula. The Myeongnyang Strait is also significant as the site of the Battle of Myeongnyang where admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated a Japanese fleet in 1597.

For sweeping views across the Myeongnyang Strait, climb to the top of the Jindo Tower, which commemorates the naval victory at the Battle of Myeongnyang. Photogenic views of the Jindo Bridges are also available from Lee Sun Shin Park, which features several picnic tables, golden dragons and South Korea’s largest statue of Yi Sun-sin.

A highlight of visiting Jindo is getting up close to indigenous Korea Jindo dogs, which can easily be viewed at the Jindo Dog Theme Park. This dog research, breeding and educational centre features interactive exhibits where you can learn about the unique characteristics of the breed before seeing them in action during regular training demonstrations and dog shows. Children’s sledding and play activities are also available.

Getting around Jindo

Jindo is around 1.5 hours by bus from Mokpo and five hours from Seoul while Gwangju Airport is 3.5 hours away. Buses travel around Jindo while having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to explore the island. The town of Jindo is compact enough to explore on foot.
