About Kuah

Kuah is a gateway to Langkawi, a palm-fringed tropical island known as the “Jewel of Kedah”. Ferries connect the lively resort town with the Malaysian mainland and Penang Island. Snap a photo with the larger-than-life eagle statue, take advantage of duty-free shopping and eat at the bustling night market.

Things to do in Kuah

An enormous eagle statue soars over Kuah’s star-shaped waterfront plaza. The 12-metre-tall statue is known as Dataran Lang and was inspired by the official symbol of Langkawi. Visit at night to see the statue lit up with colourful lights. Street stalls are set up on the plaza and will tempt you with snacks like deep-fried chicken and curry puffs.

Use Kuah as a launchpad to explore Langkawi. The island will dazzle you with its honey-coloured beaches, tumbling waterfalls and lush pockets of jungle. Visit a “kampung” village and learn about local cultures and traditions. Tee off on world-class golf courses and soak in bubbling hot springs.

Beyond beautiful scenery, Langkawi is famous for duty-free shopping. Locals descend on Kuah to score big savings on everything from clothing and jewellery to electronics and kitchenware. You’ll see duty-free stores from the moment you step off the ferry. You’ll find more shops in the town centre and in popular resorts like Pantai Cenang.

Try local Langkawi dishes at the Kuah Night Market. Held every Wednesday and Saturday, it’s one of the largest on the island and packed with food stalls. Fill up on satay chicken skewers, BBQ meat and “char kway teow” noodles tossed with egg and prawns. Wash it all down with freshly squeezed watermelon juice or a creamy mango smoothie.

Getting around Kuah

Kuah is compact and easy to get around on foot, while taxis are a fast and affordable way to travel around Langkawi. Ferries run between Kuah and Penang in around three hours. Langkawi International Airport is a 25-minute drive away.
