In downtown Laredo, all roads lead to San Agustin Plaza. The historic park dates back to the 18th century and is surrounded by cobblestone streets and leafy oak trees. It's a great place to watch local buskers entertain the crowds. Venture into the side streets and you'll find colourful shops selling everything from tacos and beer to arts and crafts.
San Agustin Cathedral has been watching over the plaza since 1872. You can peer into the whitewashed Gothic Revival church and attend masses, with many held in Spanish.
The Republic of the Rio Grande Museum recalls Laredo's rich history. It's housed in the old capitol building and is filled with traditional furniture and homewares designed to recreate life in 19th-century Laredo. Explore the city's vibrant cultural scene at the Laredo Centre for the Arts, which hosts rotating exhibitions spotlighting local artists.
Stretch your legs at Lake Casa Blanca International State Park, a popular place for swimming, sunbathing and picnics. Rent a kayak and paddle on the lake or cast a line for largemouth striped bass, crappie or catfish.
Getting around Laredo
Downtown Laredo is easy to get around on foot, while the city is also well-served by buses and taxis. Flights arrive at Laredo International, located 10 minutes from the city centre. The drive to the US-Mexico border control station takes around 20 minutes.
