It's easy to spend hours getting lost in Leh's enchanting Old Town. It sits in the shadow of Leh Palace, an imposing Tibetan-style fort built in the 16th century. The Old Town is criss-crossed with winding alleyways lined with tour agencies, colourful souvenir stalls and lantern-lit restaurants.

The snow-capped mountains and lush valleys of the Indian Himalayas lure in a constant stream of intrepid travellers. One of the most popular trekking routes is Spituk to Stok, a four-day hike showcasing tiny mountain villages, flower-strewn valleys and rugged peaks.

The Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO), offers a glimpse at the region's flourishing cultural scene. It's housed in a pair of beautifully restored 17th-century Ladakhi mansions and hosts a fantastic line-up of rotating exhibitions. You can also request a guided tour of the historic mansions.

Getting around Leh
