About Levanger

Levanger is a laid-back waterfront town set on one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. The town is popular with summer holidaymakers and features a lively waterfront and charming historic centre. Day trips include picturesque offshore islands, ancient Viking burial mounds and medieval churches.

Things to do in Levanger

Filled with century-old wooden buildings, Levanger’s town centre will charm you with its traditional feel. Some buildings are more than 120 years old and are painted in bright colours. Many of the streets are pedestrian, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. Stroll down to the waterfront for stunning views over Trondheimsfjord.

Built in 1902, Levanger Train Station is both a transport hub and an architectural jewel. It was designed by famous Norwegian architect Paul Due and features a grand Art Nouveau façade. Also built in the Art Nouveau style, Levanger Church was constructed in the early 20th century from locally quarried white stone.

Ferries depart from Levanger and transport you to Ytterøy Island. It’s known as the pearl of Trondheimsfjord and will charm you with its rugged beaches and rolling farmland. Ytterøy is famous for handmade leather products, which are sold at artisan shops across the island. Scenic roads wind across the island and are best explored by bicycle.

Alvshaugen Burial Mound is an easy day trip from Levanger and immerses you in the region’s ancient past. Next to the mound is a medieval church built in the 1100s. At the ruins of Munkeby Abbey, you can wander around a 12th-century Cistercian monastery.

Getting there

Levanger is set on the banks of Trondheimsfjord and is easy to get around on foot while trains run to Trondheim in around 45 minutes. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. Trondheim Airport is a 45-minute drive away.
