About Meiringen

Meiringen is a picturesque alpine resort surrounded by rugged peaks and flower-filled meadows. The scenery is spectacular and has inspired countless artists and creatives over the years, including writers Mark Twain and Arthur Conan Doyle. Hike through glacier-carved landscapes, marvel at cascading waterfalls and walk across one of the most impressive suspension bridges in Europe.

Things to do in Meiringen

The hiking in Meiringen is spectacular, with trails winding through the mountains and valleys. More than 300 kilometres of trails lace the Hasli Valley, including a route to Triftbrücke bridge. It stretches for 170 metres across a glacier-carved valley and is one of the longest and highest suspension bridges in Europe. From the bridge, you can enjoy stunning views over the turquoise lake and shimmering glacier. Family-friendly walkways take you deep into Aare Gorge, which is hemmed in by soaring 50-metre-high limestone cliffs.

Reichenbach Falls thunder 250 metres down a rocky cliffside and into the valley below. Sherlock Holmes fans will recognise the falls as the site where the famous detective plunged to his death. The funicular in Willigen whisks you up to the top of the falls. From here, enjoy a leisurely one-hour stroll back down to Meiringen.

Visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum in the town centre to find out more about Arthur Conan Doyle and the legendary detective books. Highlights include a replica of the detective’s parlour at 221b Baker Street in London.

After a day on your feet, head back to the lively town centre for dinner and drinks at a cosy tavern. Warm up with local dishes like cheese fondue, crispy “rosti” potato pancakes and pastries filled with hazelnuts.
