About Miskolc

Backed by the beech-clad slopes of Bükk National Park, Miskolc is an industrial city in Hungary’s north-east. Archaeological findings indicate the area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic and was once home to the Cotini before Hungarians conquered the region in the late 9th century.

Things to do in Miskolc

Nestled in the foothills of the Bükk Mountains is the Castle of Diósgyőr, a Gothic fortification that was rebuilt following a 13th-century Mongol invasion. In addition to learning about its role as a stronghold during the reign of Louis I, you can mint a commemorative coin and take in the views across the surrounding countryside from the north-west tower. Coincide your visit with the Castle Games, which features medieval-inspired activities and reenactments.

Delve into the region’s geological past at the Pannonian Sea Museum, which is dedicated to the ancient lake beneath which modern-day Hungary was once submerged. Its exhibits bring to life the seven million-year-old swamp cypress forest of Bükkábrány and showcase fossils of prehistoric animals and plants that have been uncovered nearby. The museum also houses one of the largest mineral collections in Hungary, most of which were found in the Carpathian Mountains.

Enjoy a scenic ride through the dense forest between Miskolc and Lillafüred on board the narrow-gauge Lillafüred Forest Train, which was established in 1920 to haul wood from the Bükk Mountains. It’s one of Miskolc’s most popular tourist attractions and is particularly impressive in autumn when golden-coloured leaves blanket the forest floor.

Getting around Miskolc

Miskolc is around two hours’ drive from Budapest and Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. Trains connect from destinations across Hungary to the Miskolc - Rendező railway station while both buses and trams travel throughout the city. The centre of Miskolc can easily be explored on foot.
