About Neubrandenburg

Neubrandenburg is a historic town set on the shores of Lake Tollensesee and encircled by medieval walls. A series of defensive gates and towers stud the walls and give Neubrandenburg a postcard-perfect feel. Outside the medieval centre, you can relax on sandy beaches or swim in the lake.

Things to do in Neubrandenburg

Ancient red-brick walls encircle the Neubrandenburg historic centre. The entrance is via four enormous Gothic gates. As you pass through the gates, you’ll notice the intricate brickwork and soaring arches. Within the city walls are cobbled streets lined with medieval houses. Learn about the rich history and heritage of the town at the Neubrandenburg Regional Museum, which occupies a former Franciscan monastery and features interactive exhibits.

St. Mary's Church was completed in the 1200s and features the same red-brick Gothic facade as the town’s defensive walls, towers and gates. The church has been reimagined as an atmospheric concert hall with incredible acoustics. A few streets away is the Schauspielhaus performing arts theatre housed in a beautifully restored half-timbered building. Attend plays, concerts, comedies, operas and other performances.

Admire works by contemporary masters such as Daniel Spoerri and Jürgen Brodwolf at the Kunstsammlung Art Gallery. The collection is showcased in a handsome Baroque building and features a mix of paintings, sculptures and interactive installations.

Lake Tollensesee provides a perfect backdrop for hiking, cycling and boating. Rent a kayak and enjoy a scenic paddle on the lake and sunbathe on sandy beaches lined with oak and beech trees. A cycle path wraps around the lake and is a great way to explore the region.
