About Platamon

Overlooking the Aegean Sea to the south of Thessaloniki, Platamon is a popular beachside destination in Northern Greece. It provides a setting for swimming, diving and fishing while it’s also the launching point for excursions to explore the archaeological ruins and fortifications of Mount Olympus.

Things to do in Platamon

Stretching south of Platamon is Nei Pori Beach, a Blue Flag stretch of sand lapped by the Aegean Sea. The beach is backed by traditional tavernas, restaurants and bars where you can dine throughout the day, including Mikel Coffee, Volcano Pizza and Il Mondo. Also positioned on Nei Pori Beach is the Enalios Diving Center, which offers certification courses and fun dives.

For a dose of local history, pay a visit to the Platamon Castle, a Crusader-built fortification dating back to the 13th century that once controlled the exit of the Tempe Valley. In addition to the remains of houses, a church and an impressive donjon, the complex features pottery and well-preserved cannons dating from the Middle Ages.

Platamon makes an ideal base for exploring the archaeological site of Leibethra, an ancient Macedonian city that is nestled at the base of Mount Olympus. Bronze Age tombs containing burial treasures have been uncovered here and in Greek mythology, it is said to be the birthplace of Orpheus. Follow the circular route that leads between its centuries-old ruins or coincide your visit with a performance in the open-air theatre.
