About Prague 2

Hugging the Vltava River, Prague 2 was established in 1960 and is the smallest administrative district in the Czech Republic. It encompasses the historical centre of Vinohrady and the business hub of Nové Město, as well as the riverside fortress complex of Vyšehrad.

Things to do in Prague 2

One of Prague 2’s most iconic architectural landmarks is the Dancing House, which was designed by Vlado Milunic in collaboration with Frank Gehry. Also known as the “Ginger and Fred” after the American dancers, it features 99 uniquely shaped concrete panels to give it a distinctive appearance. On the 7th floor is a restaurant decorated with modern artwork.

Overlooking the Vltava River in the south-west of Prague 2 is Vyšehrad, a historic fort complex that dates back to the 10th century. It encompasses the 11th-century Rotunda of St. Martin and the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul with its religious frescoes and stained-glass windows. Also within the grounds is a cemetery where the Czech composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana are laid to rest.

Occupying the former grounds of an Augustinian monastery is the Czech Police Museum, which documents the history of law enforcement in the country. Established by Charles IV in 1350, the monastery later served as a warehouse and a hospital. Browse the exhibits related to petty crimes in Old Prague and modern criminal investigations, as well as the ways in which the Czech Republic protects its borders.
