About Ribe

Winding cobblestone streets and centuries-old architecture make Ribe one of the most picturesque towns in Denmark. The village dates back to the 9th century and is one of the oldest in Scandinavia. Take your time wandering around the town centre, admiring the magnificent cathedral and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. A river meanders past Ribe and adds to the picturesque setting.

Things to do in Ribe

Getting lost in the crooked laneways of the town centre is one of the best ways to enjoy Ribe. With more than 100 heritage-listed buildings to admire, the town is a treasure trove for history buffs. Many of the beautifully restored half-timbered houses have been reimagined as cosy cafes and guesthouses.

Fiskergade is one of the prettiest streets, with colourful buildings and flower-filled pots. In the main square, you’ll find atmospheric cafes and restaurants serving Danish classics such as “smørrebrød” open-faced sandwiches topped with herring.

Ribe Domkirke has been soaring over the town since the year 948. It’s one of the oldest cathedrals in Denmark and welcomes you with a beautiful Romanesque façade. Climb up the cathedral tower for sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. In summer, the cathedral hosts enchanting classical music concerts.

Set on the river, the excellent Ribe VikingeCenter recreates life in the Middle Ages. The interactive open-air museum is anchored by an enormous 34-metre-long Viking house and is staffed by actors dressed in period clothing. Live demonstrations spotlight Viking-era activities such as breadmaking, leatherwork, pottery and falconry. Kids love taking part in “warrior training” featuring mini swords and shields.
