Things to do in Saint-Flour

Saint-Flour is perched on a volcanic outcrop and commands sweeping views over the countryside. The oldest part of the village dates back to the 4th century and is surrounded by medieval fortifications. You’ll notice many of the buildings are constructed from locally quarried volcanic rock, which gives the village a dramatic look.

The Cathedral of St. Pierre towers over the village and features a Gothic facade made from black basalt rock. The views from the South Tower will leave you breathless. Next door, Musee de la Haute-Auvergne occupies the former Bishop's Palace. Inside, you’ll find archaeological artefacts, centuries-old cheese-making tools and religious art.

From creamy blue cheeses to hearty stews, the Auvergne region is famous for hearty, alpine-inspired cuisine. Try local dishes like “tripoux” stuffed tripe, cheesy “aligot” potatoes and salty cured ham. Pair your meal with fruity, cool-climate wines produced by local vineyards. The twice-weekly village market will tempt you with delicious AOP cheeses.
