About Senj

Senj is an enchanting town set between the Adriatic Sea and the Dinaric Alps. Occupied since the 16th century, the town is a maze of cobbled alleys lined with beautiful historic buildings. Relax in the town centre, climb up to the hilltop fortress and use Senj as a base for beach-hopping along the East Kvarner Coast.

Things to do in Senj

Senj is nestled in the foothills of the Dinaric Alps and offers sweeping views over the sparkling Adriatic Sea. Most of the action is centred around Pavlinski Trg, a waterfront plaza dotted with al fresco cafes and restaurants. Built in the 16th century, Nehaj Fortress watches over the town from its perch on a 62-metre-high hilltop. Climb up to the parapets for spectacular views over the East Kvarner Coast and across to the island of Krk.

The small but engaging Municipal Museum occupies a handsome Gothic-Renaissance built in the 15th century. Exhibits chart more than 2000 years of history, with highlights including hand-embroidered folk costumes, religious texts and ancient pottery. You can also see the propeller of a B-24 bomber jet shot down over the town in World War II.

Fringed by silver pebbles, Prva Draga Beach offers crystalline water and excellent snorkelling. The vibe is relaxed and uncrowded, with a small café offering sun lounger and umbrella rentals. You can also make a splash with pedal boat and paddleboard rentals.

Venture out of town to discover Northern Velebit National Park, which protects a mountainous landscape of jagged karst peaks and lush pine forests. The Premužić Trail winds through the park and immerses you in the dramatic scenery.

Getting around Senj

Senj is compact and easy to get around on foot. The town is a one-hour drive from Rijeka and two hours from Zadar. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. Zagreb Airport is a two-hour drive away.
