Where to stay in Târgu Jiu

About Târgu Jiu

Situated in the Carpathian Mountain foothills, Targu Jiu is a coal mining town along the Jiu River. Along with a renowned public park and local eateries and pubs, it houses public works by one of Romania’s most famous modernist sculptors.

Things to do

Life, culture, history and art collide in Tarhu Jiu’s Central Park, a monument to the city’s past and present. Stroll through the park to find four astounding statues by Romanian master sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Each one was commissioned to commemorate soldiers who fought in World War I.

Gate of the Kiss serves as an entrance to Central Park and features an arched shape to honour Romanian unification after WWI ended. From there, you can walk west to find the Alley of Chairs Sculpture with tiny stone stools scattered on either side of the path. The artist interpreted these as random soldiers rooted in conflicts.

Contemporary art shines at Topi New Glass Studio, which is run by renowned glass artist Mihai Topescu. Visitors are welcome to enter the workshop and watch the intricate glass creations come to life.

After exploring Targu Jiu’s city square, spend an evening at Hanul Domnesc, a traditional Romanian restaurant with alfresco dining in a hidden garden. Homemade meals include stews, sausage dishes and Eastern European desserts.

Getting around

Craiova Airport is about 120 kilometres from Targu Jiu. Transportation options after arrival include buses, shuttles and taxis.
