Tombs of the Kings is an ancient necropolis and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set in a rugged desert landscape, the tombs feature an underground maze of chambers used during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. While the name suggests the necropolis was used by royalty, they were actually built for everyday citizens.
Touring the tombs offers a unique chance to discover the ancient tombs, which are carved from solid rock and heavily influenced by Egyptian traditions. Tomb No 3 is the most impressive, featuring a sunken open atrium held up by soaring Doric pillars.
Other tombs feature alcoves carved into the walls and used to store bodies. While the tombs were once filled with gold, silver and other treasures, today they’re mostly empty. Tombs of the Kings is part of the Aphrodite Cultural Route, which spotlights several archaeological sites located across Paphos.
Getting there
Tombs of the Kings is located within the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos, a 10-minute drive from the Old Town. Parking is available on site and local buses stop outside the entrance to the site. Paphos International Airport is a 25-minute drive away.
