About Weissensee

Weissensee is a picturesque resort set on a glacier lake. The Gailtal Alps soar over the lake and create a dramatic backdrop. Limestone deposits from the mountains give the water a dreamy turquoise hue. You can swim, sunbathe and hike in the summer months, while winter snowfall transforms Weissensee into a playground for ice skating and cross-country skiing.

Things to do in Weissensee

Strandbad Weissensee is the main swimming beach and features a grassy foreshore shaded by trees. Sunbathe on the wooden jetty, enjoy a picnic on the grass and swim in the lake. From the beach, you’ll get fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are a fun way to explore the shoreline.

Scenic boat cruises are a great way to enjoy the lake. From the water, you’ll get uninterrupted views of the rugged mountains and forests. Look out for ducks, geese and herons. Cross the bridge to visit the village of Gatschach. The historic Catholic church dates back to the 1400s and is one of the oldest in the region.

In winter, the lake freezes over and becomes a natural ice rink, while you’ll also find beautiful cross-country ski trails around Weissensee. The snow-capped Gailtal Alps make Weissensee feel like a winter wonderland. The setting is spectacular and was featured in a James Bond film in the 1980s.

Weissensee is dotted with restaurants where you can try cuisine from the Carinthian region. Enjoy “karntner nudeln” ravioli stuffed with cheese and potatoes, fresh trout from the lake and “kirchtagssuppe” saffron soup thickened with cream and eggs. Pair your meal with a glass of Chardonnay from a local vineyard.
