About Wells, England

Wells is a magnificent cathedral city surrounded by rolling countryside and grasslands. The town has all the charm of a traditional English village, with cobbled streets, centuries-old buildings and of course, an ancient cathedral.

Things to do in Wells

Wells Cathedral soars over the town centre and is set in one of the largest closes in England. Construction started in the 1100s and spanned for several centuries. As a result, the cathedral incorporates a variety of architectural styles. Guided tours take you up into the roof of the cathedral and into hidden chambers.

Marvel at the striking scissor arches designed by master stonemason William Joy in the 14th century and admire the hundreds of carved figures that adorn the West Front. Other highlights include the octagon-shaped Chapter House and a centuries-old mechanical clock depicting moon phases and planet positions.

Bishop's Palace & Gardens is surrounded by a water-filled moat and recalls the town’s ancient past. Stroll around the sprawling five-hectare gardens and enjoy tea and cake at the atmospheric café overlooking the emerald-green croquet lawns.

The twice-weekly market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays is a great place to stock up on everything from baked goods and organic produce to handmade arts and crafts. It’s held in Market Square and is a hive of activity, with people travelling from across Somerset to attend.

Wells backs onto the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which protects a beautiful landscape of rock gorges, valleys and plateaus. Explore more than 400 kilometres of trails, ranging from challenging short walks to full-day adventures.
