About Youghal

Youghal is a lively seaside resort set at the mouth of the River Blackwater. A mix of handsome Georgian architecture and medieval buildings give the town plenty of historical character. Relax on the sandy beach, set sail on a scenic river cruise and enjoy a pint at a traditional Irish pub.

Things to do in Youghal

Youghal boasts some of the best beaches in County Cork, some with Blue Flag status. All are within walking distance of the town centre and feature soft sand and shallow water. Youghal Eco Boardwalk stretches seven kilometres along the coast and takes you past a series of family-friendly beaches.

Clock Gate Tower soars over the town centre and is a local landmark. It was built in the 1700s and was once a jail for prisoners captured in the Irish Rebellion. Learn more about the colourful history of the tower and unlock access to the rooftop viewpoint on a guided tour. After a day of sightseeing, head to a local pub for a hearty meal and traditional live music. Some of the oldest pubs have been pouring pints since the early 1900s.

Wooden boats sail along the Blackwater River. From the water, you’ll get excellent views of Ballynatray Estate, a grand Georgian mansion on the banks of the river. Angling boats depart from Youghal Harbour and take you to some of the best deep-sea fishing spots in County Cork.

Tynte’s Castle was built by a wealthy merchant family to protect goods. The miniature castle once enjoyed a waterfront position, though this was lost when the Blackwater River changed course in the 1800s. Today it towers over the main street and adds to the medieval charm.
