About Haz-Zebbug

Żebbuġ is one of the oldest towns on the island of Malta. Known as Città Rohan, it is located 10 kilometres from the capital Valletta, in the southern region of the island. Visitors will enjoy exploring the ancient parish church, delving deep into the history of the Order of St. John, and partaking in the town’s legendary festa.

Enter the town through the beautiful 18th century main gate, and be instantly transported into ancient lamp lit streets and spacious plazas. Explore the parish church of St. Philip, an impressive Baroque structure in the central square. Admire the striking silver statue of St. Philip of Agira, which was funded by the townsfolk. The interior of the church is filled with incredible artwork, one highlight being the painting of St. Philip performing a miracle. It takes pride of place above the high altar. While strolling through ancient streets, visitors will discover several restaurants serving Mediterranean cuisine. Relax with coffee and a delicious pastry by the square, or stop to photograph historic buildings. The city is renowned for its incredible “festas” dedicated to St. Philip and St. Joseph. Visitors arriving in the summer can enjoy processions with music, dancing and spectacular firework displays.

An ideal way to reach Żebbuġ is via car, taxi or local bus from Valletta. A journey by car will take approximately 20 minutes and via bus nearer 30 minutes. Inside the town, it is easier to walk to see the sights. Many areas of interest are a short stroll from each other.

Żebbuġ translates to “olives” in Maltese. The village was named after the large olive groves which used to surround the old town centre. Under the Knights of the Order of St. John, Żebbuġ was a prominent town in the south. It had a thriving cotton industry which brought great wealth. Visitors from all over the island are impressed by the rich history, architecture and fascinating stories, as the town was also home to several leading corsairs. Those seeking peace and solitude from the tourist resorts and cities of Malta should consider visiting Żebbuġ.
