About Almería

Almeria is anchored by a handsome Old Town dotted with stone churches and palm-lined plazas with lively tapas bars. Spend your time exploring the Moorish Alcazaba, strolling along the seafront and visiting cultural museums.

Things to do in Almería

It's impossible to miss the looming Moorish Alcazaba. Set on a cliffside, it was founded in the 10th-century and was once one of Spain's most powerful Moorish fortresses. Explore the compounds, wander around lush gardens and climb the battlements for sweeping views over the city.

With six towers and a grand Gothic facade, Catedral de la Encarnacion is Almeria's signature landmark. Work began in 1525 and continued right through to the 18th century. Inside you'll find a grand neoclassical cloister, cavernous ribbed ceiling and gleaming walnut choir stalls.

Don't miss Museo de la Guitarra, which is dedicated to Almerían guitar-maker Antonio de Torres. In addition to exploring the history of the guitar, the museum features colourful art, educational films and an interactive zone where you can listen to music and try your hand at strumming different instruments.

Serving wine and nibbles since 1870, Casa Puga could just be one of Spain's best tapas bars. It's a great place to chat with locals, sample local vino and enjoy an authentic tapas experience.

Getting around Almería

Walking is the best way to explore Almeria, but you can also get around using local buses and taxis. The city is serviced by Almeria Airport, located a 10-minute drive away. The main train station is located on Plaza de la Estacion in the city centre.
