Where to stay in Khajurāho

About Khajurāho

Famed for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hindu, Buddhist and Jain temples, Khajuraho is a small town backed by the Vindhya Mountains. Its ancient temples were built between 950 and 1050 AD during the Chandela dynasty and are renowned for their Nagara-style architecture and erotic sculptures.

Things to do

Grab an audio guide to explore the large and ornate Western Group of Temples, which include the beautiful Vaishnavite temple of Lakshmana and the granite-built Chausath Yogini. Admire the exquisite decorations of the Kandariya Mahadeo Temple and the delicately carved image of the Devi of the Universe at the Devi Jagdamba Temple.

See the blending of Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim influences on the roof of the Parsvanath Temple, the largest in the Eastern Group. You’ll also find the Jain temple of Ghantai, renowned for its frieze depicting the 16 dreams of Mahavira’s mother.

After exploring the Eastern and Western Groups of Temples, head south to the 12th-century Chaturbhuj Temple, the only one in Khajuraho without any erotic sculptures. Don’t forget about the Duladeo Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of an enshrined linga.

Stay for the evening light and sound show that takes place at the Western Group of Temples and illuminates the complex in technicolour floodlights. It details the history of Khajuraho through a narration by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and is accompanied by Indian classical music.

Getting around

Khajuraho Airport is a 15-minute drive south of the main temple area and has regular flights to Delhi, Agra and Mumbai. Auto rickshaws and bicycle rickshaws are available for hire or you can rent a bicycle to explore the temples at your leisure.
