About Norderney

Sandy beaches and rolling dunes surround the island of Norderney. Part of the East Frisian Islands, the Norderney is famous for specialised thalassotherapy treatments that harness the healing properties of seawater. Bade Haus Norderney offers Bauhaus style seawater pools, steam baths and thalassotherapy treatments at an excellent price. You can also treat yourself at smaller spas located at boutique hotels.

The northern side of the island is fringed by a 14-kilometre-long beach with golden sand and rolling waves. Westbad has a family-friendly atmosphere, with soft sand and a colourful pirate-themed playground. A hiking trail takes you to the easternmost tip of the island, where you can enjoy a picnic on the uncrowded beach and get up close with the rusted remains of the Capella shipwreck.

Norderney Lighthouse towers over the coastline and has been guiding ships to safety since 1874. Climb up to the observation deck for sweeping views over the Wadden Sea and the surrounding countryside. Alternatively, charter a small plane to unlock a bird’s eye view of the island.

Norderney is an excellent base for exploring Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. Rent a kayak and spend the day paddling around picturesque bays and exploring the rocky shoreline and watch for seals basking on the rocks.

The island is dotted with traditional milk bars where you can enjoy coffee, pancakes and rice pudding made with milk from local dairy cows. You’ll also find excellent chef-driven restaurants serving ocean-fresh seafood and small-batch wine.

Getting around Norderney

The Norderney town centre is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Tour the island by car or use local buses to get around. Ferries transport cars and foot passengers between Norderney and Norddeich on the German mainland in around one hour. Bicycles are a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the island.
