About Baixa

Baixa is the historic heart of Lisbon. The neighbourhood hums with energy and is characterised by bustling squares framed by grand Neoclassical buildings and pedestrianised streets lined with traditional “pastelaria” pastry shops. Admire magnificent historical landmarks, relax at sidewalk cafes and visit one of the top contemporary art museums in the country.

Things to do in Baixa

Rua Augusta, the neighbourhood’s lively main thoroughfare, stretches between two of the city’s main squares. Shop for souvenirs, eat lunch at a rustic “marisqueira” seafood restaurant and enjoy a glass of sweet cherry liqueur at a rustic “ginjinha” bar. Cafes spill onto the sidewalk and serve strong espresso and creamy Portuguese custard tarts.

Admire Portuguese masterpieces at the National Museum of Contemporary Art. It’s in the affluent Chiado district and showcases works by luminaries like Silva Porto and Mónica de Miranda. You’ll also see pieces by modern European masters like Auguste Rodin.

All roads lead to the magnificent Praça do Comércio. Grand 18th-century buildings with elegant arcades and canary-yellow facades frame the impressive riverfront plaza. Trams rumble past the square and street performers entertain the crowds. The e-popping Arco da Rua Augusta towers over the plaza and is topped with statues of historical figures like Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama. Ride the lift to the top of the arch for dizzying views over the city.

Igreja de São Domingos survived the devastating earthquake of 1755 and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The church dates to the 13th century and welcomes you with a beautiful Baroque façade. Flickering candles light up the enormous pillars and ancient sculptures inside the church.
