Originally designed as an astronomical observatory, Rundetaarn is a 17th-century tower built by King Christian IV above the Trinitatis Kirke. The 36-metre-tall tower offers some of the best views in Copenhagen and is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe.
Climb the 209-metre-long spiral ramp through 7.5 loops to the top of the Rundetaarn to take in the spectacular views of Copenhagen from the circular outdoor platform. The ramp was created for easier transportation of astronomical instruments and features a floating glass floor for peering down into the tower’s core.
Partway up the ramp is the Old Library Hall with changing historical exhibitions, while a small shop offers drinks and snacks. Don’t miss the range of vintage astronomical equipment and a 3D model of the solar system that was installed in 1928.
Getting there
Rundetaarn is located in the heart of Copenhagen’s Old Town, within walking distance of the Kongens Nytorv metro station. Copenhagen Airport is around 15 minutes by train from the city centre.
