About Saputara

Located on a plateau in the Western Ghats, Saputara is a cool-climate hill station in the Indian state of Gujarat. It centres around a picturesque lake that’s surrounded by gardens and is best viewed from the cable car that ascends to a nearby peak.

Things to do in Saputara

Home to around 400 ethnographical artefacts is the Saputara Tribal Museum, which was established in 1970 to showcase the lifestyle and culture of the Dang tribe. It has since expanded to include ritual objects of the Bhils, Kunbis, Gamits and Warlis people who call the area “home”. Get up close to traditional costumes, stone funerary columns and musical instruments, as well as masks used in theatrical dances.

For elevated views across Saputara Lake, ride the ropeway that connects to Sunrise Point, with the journey particularly magnificent after the monsoon rains when the hills are a lush green. From the top, you can hike to nearby Governor’s Hill or grab a chai from one of the tea stalls. Pedal boats can be hired to explore the lake at your leisure.

On the southern shore of Saputara Lake is the Lake Garden, which features grassy lawns where you can relax and a small playground for children. Don’t miss the Rose Garden, which is planted with a colourful variety of fragrant roses. Its photogenic bridge has become a popular “selfie” spot and there are plenty of benches for watching the world go by.
