About Jersey City

Winding along the Hudson River, Jersey City offers sublime views over the water to Manhattan and its famous neighbour New York City. However, it's not just a destination for enjoying the views. The eclectic streets are dappled with historical buildings and a rich local atmosphere, with markets and local cafes filling old brownstone neighbourhoods.

The most inspiring old structures are found in the Downtown area, including the granite and marble City Hall from the late 19th century and Loew's Jersey Theatre. The iconic Colgate Clock rises high enough for people across the water in Manhattan to tell the time. Within Downtown, the neighbourhoods of Paulus Hook and Hamilton Park are easy to explore on foot and filled with brownstone heritage buildings along with funky local cafes and stores.Much of the rest of Jersey City has become an area for those priced out of Manhattan, packed with high-rise apartments and office blocks. Exceptions are Bergen and Lafayette, areas undergoing gentrification but still filled with an old charm. Arguably the greatest attraction in Jersey City is to walk along the Hudson River waterfront and savour the exceptional views towards the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. From the spacious Liberty State Park, visitors can also take the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Four underground PATH lines connect Jersey City with New York City across the water. There are also ferry and bus services between the two cities. PATH or light rail services are an easy way to get around Jersey City, along with inexpensive buses. Newark Liberty International Airport is ten minutes away and New York's two airports are easily accessible.

Thanks to its location, Jersey City has historically been one of the first places immigrants settled in the United States. This has produced a wonderfully multicultural atmosphere and a city that's a true melting pot of cultures and ideas.
