About Upper East Side

Wedged between Fifth Avenue along the eastern edge of Central Park and the East River, the Upper East Side is one of New York City’s most affluent neighbourhoods. Its high density of world-class museums mixed with exclusive shopping strips and luxury apartments provide a home to some of the city’s biggest names.

The Upper East Side is most famously home to what has been dubbed the Museum Mile, stretching along Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th Streets and overlooking Central Park. The world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art stands here, together with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Goethe-Institut, the Jewish Museum of New York and the Museum of the City of New York. The Museo del Barrio is dedicated to Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and Latino art is also worth visiting, together with the National Academy of Design and the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Upper East Side is also famed as home to one of New York’s most exclusive shopping strips, Madison Avenue, noted for its high-end boutiques and jewellery stores, together with exclusive restaurants serving the Upper East Side’s well-heeled residents.

The Upper East Side is served by one subway line that runs roughly north to south along Lexington Avenue. There’s also numerous bus services that transport commuters both uptown and downtown, with the most picturesque way to travel west being along the leafy walking trails of Central Park.

The Upper East Side’s Historic District runs along Fifth Avenue between 59th and 78th streets, being transformed from a largely old district in the post-Civil War years to a residential area of mansions, townhouses and lavish apartment complexes during the 20th century. Some of the country’s most affluent families have long resided here, including the Kennedys and the Rockefellers.
