Capitalising on the success of Brisbane’s World Expo 88, the South Bank Parklands are a major commercial development on the south side of the Brisbane River. From a day on the beach followed by a seafood dinner to a leisurely stroll before an open-air concert, there are many ways to fill a day in the parklands.
Some of the most defining features of the South Bank Parklands are Streets Beach, the Wheel of Brisbane, the flowering South Bank Arbour walkway and the Nepal Peace Pagoda. The area is also full of restaurants and cafes and frequently hosts community events at the open-air Courier Mail Piazza. True to their name, the South Bank Parklands are located on Brisbane’s South Bank. There are several public transportation terminals within walking distance, including the South Bank and Cultural Centre busway stations, the South Bank and South Brisbane railway stations, and three CityCat terminals near Victoria Bridge.
The current location of South Bank Parklands was originally home to the World Expo 88. With the theme “Leisure in the Age of Technology”, the Expo coincided with Australia’s bicentennial and breathed new commercial life in the area. Inspired by the Expo’s success, the parklands opened in 1992.
