A sparkling ski resort rising above the Tuxertal Valley of Austria, Tux comprises five villages surrounded by majestic mountains and verdant farmlands. Renowned for winter skiing and snow sports, it’s also a favourite summer destination for hiking, river rafting and cheese tasting.
Things to do in Tux
If you’re in Tux for winter skiing, get oriented at the ski shops and eateries in Hintertux village, then hop aboard a “glacier bus” gondola to reach more than 50 ski slopes. Non-skiers can take sleigh rides or go ice skating, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.
When the weather warms up, go cheese tasting at the Stoankasern dairy farm. Hike through rolling pastures and wildflowers to the farm’s hut to learn the art of making milk, butter and cheeses. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous Tyrolean stone sheep who are native to the area.
Nordic trails transform into hundreds of kilometres of summer hiking and cycling paths. Make the trek to the Schleier or Tux waterfalls, then find time for white-water rafting, paragliding and hang gliding. You can also soak in the highest thermal bath in Europe, dating back to about 1600 AD.
Travelling with the family? Bundle up for a trek through the Spannagel show cave, which is coated in glacial ice with a layer of marble. Take a guided one-hour spelunking tour to discover the underground world of sparkling crystals, stalactites and stalagmites. The kids will also love visiting Gletscherflohpark playground, which sits at a height of 1,740 metres.
Getting around Tux
From Innsbruck Airport, you can take a train or rent a car for the 90-kilometre trip to Tux. Buses, taxis and shuttles offer transportation around the villages and to the base of ski areas.
