About Union Square Park

Designated as a National Historic Landmark, Union Square Park is a living slice of New York history. It was first opened in 1839, as a public space for all New Yorkers to enjoy. Over the decades it’s hosted countless community events, from summer festivals and music concerts to political parades and blue collar rallies. For those wanting to explore up a little history, the park is peppered with statues celebrating the legacies of men like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Mohandas Gandhi and Marquis de Lafayette.

The park is located in Union Square, one of New York’s most diverse neighbourhoods. Today, it’s home to an eclectic mix of young professionals, university students, political activists, poets and everyone in-between. Green and spacious, it’s a fantastic place to escape the buzz of the Big Apple, and simply relax under the shade of a tree.

Public transport links are fantastic, with the subway whisking passengers to Times Square in just 10 minutes. It’s also an easy stroll to trendy neighbourhoods like West Village, Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. LaGuardia Airport is just 20 minutes by taxi, with the ride to JFK taking 30 minutes.

Ever since its foundation, Union Square Park has played an important role in New York City’s narrative. The very first US Labour Day Parade took place here in 1882, which established its significance as a political hub. To this day, New Yorkers use Union Square Park as a starting point for political demonstrations, which gives it a wonderfully liberal feel.
