About Brooklyn Bridge

Stretching across East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, the 19th century Brooklyn Bridge is an unmissable icon of New York City. Walking or cycling over Brooklyn Bridge is one of the best free things to do in New York and offers stunning views of the cityscape.

Various companies offer guided historical tours of the Brooklyn Bridge, but it's also very easy for visitors to walk themselves. The most spectacular view is on the Manhattan side of the river, so most people walk across this steel suspension bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan, rather than the opposite away.The bridge is open 24 hours a day with sunset being the most popular time to cross, offering views of the Statue of Liberty beneath the dipping sun and the lights of the Manhattan skyline at night. One path is for cyclists, the other is for pedestrians. It takes a relaxed hour to walk across and take photos of the nearby majestic landmarks, which include Manhattan Municipal Building, Frank Gehry's Beekman Tower, the Old World Trade Center, Manhattan Bridge and Manhattan Tower.

The Brooklyn Bridge Promenade starts at the intersection of Adams Street and Tillary Street in Brooklyn, with the closest subway stations being High Street, Clark Street, and Court Street. When starting in Manhattan, the easiest way to get there is to use Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall subway station. Many extend the walk to include the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and the DUMBO Art Galleries, DUMBO being an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge was the world's first ever steel-wire suspension bridge and was partly funded by the local government renting out storage compartments beneath the bridge and many of the vaults were originally used to store imported wine.
